*Trevante Rhodes loves Chicago and is not ashamed of it. For him, the Windy City is more inspiration than location, putting Chicago’s streets, skyline, and resilience on full display in his film directorial debut: “T.”
“She’s unlike any place I’ve ever known,” Rhodes voiced about the Chicago Crusader.
The outlet notes in its description of the feature, labeling “T” a “jazzy John Wickian ballet of vengeance,” that Rhodes confessed to spending five years working on, setting it “against Chicago’s towering skyline and deep shadows.”
“For five years, this film has been my private passion project,” the former “Moonlight” star, who wrote, directed, and will star in “T,” shared. “I started writing during the isolation of 2020, and I haven’t stopped since. It’s my ‘Citizen Kane’.”
In addition to Rhodes, “T” will feature longtime Hall of Fame boxing coach Ann Wolfe and Oscar-winning author Percival Everett, making his acting debut. Chicago will not only provide the film’s setting but also a locale for a local crew to produce “T,” which goes into production this year.

Behind the scenes, Rhodes’ Toula Capital is fully financing the project on a “substantial mid-range budget the Crusader mentioned, adding that Tyler Perry is on board as an executive producer.
Perry’s inclusion in “T” marks a personal milestone for Rhodes, who credits his time at Tyler Perry Studios or shaping his filmmaking sensibilities.
“Working with Tyler Perry again is a full-circle moment,” said the filmmaker, who referred to TPS as “the only HBCU in Hollywood” told the Crusader. “He taught me the foundations of storytelling, and to now have him as a partner on a film of this scope is humbling and inspiring.”
“T” is only one of a few upcoming projects highlighting Rhodes’ love of Chicago. Look for him to take part in a series of community engagement events, while giving back to the city he feels has given so much.
“Chicago has everything I need,” a smiling Rhodes said. “She’s my greatest co-star.”
