*Don Lemon opened up about his departure from CNN and criticized the limitations of traditional media during a discussion on The Daily Beast Podcast

Lemon, who hosts a political/pop-culture-themed show on YouTube, noted that going independent has given him more freedom and a larger audience.

“They don’t like us big mouth, sort of middle or left-leaning people,” Lemon said of big TV networks during a conversation with Joanna Coles and Samantha Bee on The Daily Beast Podcast. “They just find ways to get rid of us for little things.”

Lemon was let go from CNN less than a year after transitioning from his primetime show to a revamped morning program in 2022. Reflecting on his post-CNN life, Lemon admitted his sole regret was spending heavily on a high-end Manhattan studio for his live streams.

“Had I known what I know now, I wouldn’t have spent so much on a fancy studio,” he admitted.

“My subscribers say, ‘We don’t want cable news,” Lemon said. “‘We want to see you in your living room with your husband and dogs doing karaoke on Sundays in front of a fireplace.’”

As The Daily Beast reports, Lemon’s YouTube programs, Live at Five and Hot Topics at 10, feature him delivering breaking news, interviewing guests, and sharing candid opinions from casual settings like his home or hotel room. With greater creative freedom and as younger audiences turn to social media for news, Lemon has welcomed the change.

“They don’t even know how to turn on cable news,” he said. “Now they call me the ‘TikTok guy.’”
