*Buying in bulk can save money, reduce shopping trips, and ensure you’re always stocked with essentials, making it a smart strategy for budget-conscious and organized households.
According to CNET, meal planning expert Mary Ann Kelley of AddSaltandServe recommends asking three key questions before bulk shopping.
“Shoppers can ask themselves three questions: Will my savings be significant compared to the lowest price at all stores? Will I use the items before they expire or lose quality? A great price does not save money if the item will not be used. And finally, do I have room to store items I buy in bulk?” said Kelly.
“Properly stored in a cool, dark place, canned beans can last up to five years,” said Kristen Markel, the bulk shopping expert behind Warehouse Wanderer.
“Shoppers can often find bulk-packaged fresh and frozen meat at a better price, or they may stock up on bulk amounts of normal packages of meat when they are on sale,” said Kelley.

Based on these guidelines, experts suggest the following top foods and items to buy in bulk (per CNET):
- Canned or Dried Beans
High in protein and incredibly versatile, beans are great for meal prep and can be used in various dishes, including desserts like black bean brownies. - Frozen Proteins
Fish, meat, and seafood are often more affordable in bulk and maintain quality when frozen soon after harvesting. Proper storage can keep them fresh for up to a year. - Butter
Butter freezes well and can last up to a year, making it an excellent bulk buy. Costco’s Kirkland Signature butter, for example, is significantly cheaper per pound than many grocery stores. - Pasta
Boxed pasta has a long shelf life of up to two years. Vacuum sealing can extend its freshness even further, making it a reliable bulk-buy staple. - Specialty Items
Certain high-cost items like saffron, tinned fish, whole peppercorns, and even caviar are suitable for bulk buying, especially when on sale. These items often have extended storage capabilities, with unopened caviar lasting up to a year when frozen. - Paper Products
Non-food items like paper towels are cost-effective in bulk and can be stored in non-climate-controlled areas, such as attics or utility spaces.
Buying these items in bulk saves money and reduces the frequency of shopping trips, provided storage and usability are carefully considered.
