*While heart attacks are often associated with older adults, they are increasingly occurring in younger individuals, even those under 45.

However, with proactive measures, many heart attacks can be prevented. Per the New York Post, here are ten expert-backed tips from Dr. Evan S. Levine, a cardiologist, that have garnered significant attention online.

  1. Quit Smoking: Smoking significantly raises the likelihood of a heart attack by damaging blood vessels, increasing blood pressure, and reducing oxygen levels.
  2. Avoid Cocaine: The drug spikes heart rate and blood pressure, putting immense strain on the heart.
  3. Cut Out Sugary Drinks: Beverages loaded with sugar can lead to chronic inflammation, high cholesterol, and hypertension—major contributors to heart disease.
  4. Limit Fast Food: High in fat, salt, and calories, fast food promotes weight gain, hypertension, and elevated cholesterol, all of which endanger heart health.
  5. Exercise Regularly: Aim for 150 minutes of moderate activity per week, including muscle-strengthening exercises. Physical activity improves heart function, reduces cholesterol, and supports healthy weight management.
  6. Consider Heart Scans: A coronary artery calcium scan can assess risks, especially for individuals under 40 with a family history of heart disease or other risk factors.
  7. Manage Stress: Chronic stress can increase blood pressure and lead to unhealthy coping mechanisms like overeating. Activities like listening to soft music can help reduce stress.
  8. Monitor Diabetes: Diabetes doubles the risk of heart attacks by damaging blood vessels and nerves. Managing blood sugar is critical for heart health.
  9. Target Belly Fat: Central obesity is strongly linked to metabolic syndrome, a cluster of conditions that heighten heart disease risks. Shedding belly fat can significantly reduce these risks.
  10. Drink Moderately: Excessive alcohol consumption can raise blood pressure, damage heart muscles, and lead to arrhythmias.

Finally, Dr. Levine cautions against unverified medical advice, emphasizing the importance of consulting healthcare professionals over social media influencers. Adopting these strategies can help you significantly improve your heart health and reduce the risk of a heart attack before age 60.
