*Zion Williamson stands strong on his choice of hip-hip, whether certain MCs are included or not. As one reporter learned during the NBA’s pre-season media day, sometimes it is better to just let it go and keep it moving when it comes to who makes up Williamson’s musical playlist.
According to AllHipHop, things started well as the New Orleans Pelicans player was asked about artists who populated his summer workout soundtrack as preparation for the upcoming season. Responding to the reporter, Williamson named a diverse range of rhymesayers that included the Notorious B.I.G., Curren$y, and Larry June.
“Notorious B.I.G. [Ready to Die], that’s always in the mix. [Illmatic] by Nas, gotta throw Larry June up there. A lot of Curren$y,” the basketball standout told the reporter. “Especially when I started training seriously, I feel like Curren$y was heavy in the mix.”
As the chat continued, things went from smooth to tense when the reporter brought up Kendrick Lamar and why Williamson opted to not include him on his playlist.
“Geez, Christ,” he exclaimed in response.
“What makes you—wait, before we go to the first part of the question, what made you ask that second question?” Williamson shot back, visibly taken aback by the reporter’s unexpected twist in the interview.
To further his point, the reporter shared that he thought Lamar had some “good songs” that would’ve been perfect for Williamson’s gym playlist. In particular, the Compton lyricist Drake disses, “Euphoria” and “Not Like Us.”
At that point, Williams had his fill and put the reporter in the hot seat with loaded rhetorical questions as their back-and-forth entered the heated zone.
“Man, I hear you. You entitled to your opinion. I’m entitled to mine,” said the athlete, while standing his ground. “But saying that, come on, it’s Kendrick Lamar. I really gotta sit up here and talk about how good of an artist he is?”
After providing his response, Williamson was seemingly done with the reporter and walked out of the interview without warning. The brief interaction is one of many situations where athletes play defense with their personal music choices to those who don’t share their views.
Referencing comments made by former Chicago Bulls player DeMar DeRozan, AllHipHop noted that he got criticized earlier this summer after appearing in the video for “Not Like Us” alongside Lamar. Despite the backlash and his affiliation with the “All the Stars,” entertainer, (who he said was “basically family,” the sports fixture insisted his relationship with Drake is unaffected.
“Drake’s still my man, still my man, none of it changed,” DeRozan, who was recently traded to the Sacramento Kings, said in a new interview with the Bee. “It’s so easy to get overlooked and look at it for what it looks like, but at the end of the day, it’s music, entertainment. Two of the biggest rappers in the world went at it from a competitive standpoint and they battled it out.”
