*A memory from 1990 with the guards at San Quentin about rehabilitation still resonates with seasoned actor, Delroy Lindo.
Today, he plays opposite Kerry Washington (Scandal, Django) and Faly Rakotohavana in the hit Hulu series UnPrisoned. The series follows Edwin who is navigating the world and reconnecting with his family after spending seventeen years behind bars.
As season two premieres, Lindo opens up about his own connection with his UnPrisoned character. He shares the impact of a conversation he had while filming a movie at a state prison in the 90’s.
“We were on location in San Quentin for like a month. I remember a number of the guards talking at that time about the fact that the prison experience had nothing to do with rehabilitation. This was the guards telling me that. The whole aspect of rehabilitating people…sending them, incarcerating people so they could be rehabilitated had gone out the window years before,” he said.
The Romeo Must Die actor continued to disclose another strong impression during his time filming at San Quentin.
“The second thing that I remember was being aware of the – the term that came to mind was wasted talent.” He proceeded, “some really smart, smart dudes were in there who were caught up, trapped. And not I’m not excusing whatever it is that they did to get there, but there was a lot of really smart people.”
