*Tyka Nelson, the talented Minneapolis singer, and sister of iconic musician Prince, passed away early Monday morning at the age of 64. The news of her death was confirmed by her son, President Nelson, who chose not to share further details about her passing.
Born to John L. Nelson and Mattie Shaw Nelson, Tyka was Prince’s only full sibling and shared his passion for music. Throughout her career, she released four albums between 1988 and 2011. Earlier this year, she was expected to host her retirement and farewell concert at Minneapolis area venue, The Dakota, but illness forced her to miss the event.
“I really wasn’t a singer. I’m a writer. I just happen to be able to sing. I enjoy singing,” she explained in an interview with the Minnesota Star Tribune prior to the concert. Tyka was also working on a memoir at the time.
Her last performance in the Twin Cities took place in 2008 at Bunkers, and she last sang publicly in Australia in 2018. Her sister, Sharon Nelson, shared heartfelt sentiments Monday evening, stating, “She had her own mind. She’s in a better place.”
Tyka is survived by her husband, Maurice Phillips, their six children, and her sons, President and Sir, along with her siblings, Sharon, Norrine, and Omarr Baker. She leaves behind a legacy intertwined with her brother’s musical genius and a life celebrated by family and friends.
