*Toni Braxton is still grappling with the loss of her sister Traci, over two years after her passing at age 50.
In an exclusive preview of “The Braxtons” series premiere, the R&B superstar said she felt helpless upon hearing her sister’s diagnosis of esophageal cancer. At the time, Toni was also managing her health issues with the autoimmune disorder lupus.
“When Traci got diagnosed, it didn’t seem real at all,” she shared, PEOPLE reports. “It still doesn’t.”
“For me, family is the most important thing in my life,” Toni continued. “I spent my whole life caring for and protecting my sisters, but this was different because there’s nothing I could do. I felt so helpless, like I couldn’t do anything to save her.”
Toni said she had a hard time processing Traci’s illness “because I was a sick one, not Traci,” she said, noting that Traci’s diagnosis was “hard for me to digest.”
“The Braxtons” premieres Friday, Aug. 9 on We TV. According to the news release, the new reality series “promises to delve deeper into the lives of this iconic family, offering viewers unprecedented access and emotional resonance.”
Each hour-long episode will feature Toni, Towanda, Trina, Tamar, and Ms. Evelyn Braxton on an emotional rollercoaster of love, loss, triumph, heartbreak, and healing.

And Ms. E’s cooking show dream is becoming a reality. However, the family reuniting continues to bring up questions and unresolved issues. Will Traci’s last wish be enough for the family to be close again, as they once were?
The Braxton family’s triumphant return to television comes three years after the end of the iconic and captivating series, “Braxton Family Values,” which aired for seven seasons.
