*In the lead-up to the critical 2024 elections, a super PAC dedicated to mobilizing Black voters for Donald Trump appears to be facing significant challenges.
Launched by South Carolina Senator Tim Scott this summer, the Great Opportunity PAC aimed to invest up to $14 million to engage low-propensity Black voters in key battleground states. However, early fundraising reports reveal that the PAC has raised only $1.4 million—just 10% of its ambitious goal.
The limited financial backing has raised eyebrows among political observers, especially considering the substantial political ambitions tied to Scott’s initiative, reports Politico. The bulk of the PAC’s funding came from a $550,000 donation from Great Opportunity Policy Inc., a social welfare nonprofit. Other significant contributions included $500,000 from GOP megadonor Jeff Yass and $200,000 from fellow benefactor Marc Rowan.
Despite the underwhelming fundraising figures, a source close to Scott suggested that the reported numbers do not adequately reflect the full extent of activities undertaken by the Great Opportunity PAC. According to them, there has been a “slew” of engagement efforts that are still being rolled out. Through mid-October, the PAC has reportedly spent around $1 million on advertising in swing states, including promoting pro-school choice candidates such as Republican Dave McCormick, who is challenging incumbent Democrat Bob Casey.
When the PAC was announced, its strategy included a focus on engaging Black voters and other minority groups to reduce the considerable electoral advantages typically enjoyed by Democrats. Recent polls indicate that Trump is performing better than in past elections among Black and Latino voters. However, the apparent gains seem to have occurred with minimal financial investment or outreach from Scott’s PAC.
In addition to the fundraising challenges, Scott has been actively trying to connect with voters in battleground states such as Nevada and Wisconsin, participating in events aimed at promoting economic opportunity.
His commitments have included stumping for financial literacy initiatives in Charlotte, North Carolina, and attending roundtable discussions with faith leaders in Detroit, Michigan, alongside GOP Senate candidate Mike Rogers.
Scott’s schedule remains packed, as he is expected to be in northeast Ohio later this week and in the Philadelphia area on Thursday. However, the effectiveness of his efforts, particularly those linked to the Great Opportunity PAC, is called into question given its struggles in fundraising and delivery of impactful voter engagement.
With the presidential election drawing near, the ability of Tim Scott and the Great Opportunity PAC to energize Black voters for Trump may prove critical not just for the campaign’s success, but also for Scott’s political future. As the GOP seeks to widen its appeal among diverse constituencies, the road ahead will require both strategic outreach and substantial financial backing—elements that thus far appear to be in short supply for Scott’s endeavor.
