*Sophia Rosing, a former University of Kentucky student filmed calling a Black dorm desk clerk the N-word 200 times, has pleaded guilty to assault, disorderly conduct, and public intoxication.
The 23-year-old faces up to a year in prison and 100 hours of community service, with sentencing set for October 17, Complex reports.
We reported earlier, citing CNN, that an officer with the University of Kentucky police responded to a dorm after reports that an unknown woman was “assaulting staff members,” a campus police report shows. When the officer arrived, they detained a “very intoxicated” Rosing who was repeating a racist expletive to a group of Black women, the report says.
Rosing told police she “has lots of money and get[s] special treatment,” the police report said. When told to sit back in a chair, the woman kicked the arresting officer and bit their hand, the police report said.
Rosing was initially charged with alcohol intoxication in a public place, fourth-degree assault without visible injury, second-degree disorderly conduct, and third-degree assault on a police officer or probation officer.
The 2022 attack, which was captured on video, included Rosing using racial slurs and physically assaulting the victim, Kylah Spring.
“The girl starts saying things like ‘Do my chores,’ ‘It’s not my fault that you’re Black,’ ‘It’s not my fault that you’re ugly,’ and at this point, she’s like singing the N-word,” said Spring at the time.
“A lot of things got said, apologies were made and we worked it out,” Rosing’s attorney Fred Peters said in a recent statement, per Complex. “She has had a lot of time to think about what she has done, and she wrote a nice letter of apology.”
Spring expressed skepticism about Rosing’s apology.
“I feel that a person that is remorseful takes actions that are moving towards proving they are remorseful,” Spring said. “Not just words.”
Rosing’s drunken behavior led to her expulsion from the University of Kentucky and a ban from the campus. She was formally indicted by a grand jury last year.
