*In an exclusive conversation, Shane McRae and Remmie Milner pull back the curtain on “Silo” Season 2, offering an inside look at the emotional journeys their characters undertake in this gripping dystopian series now streaming on Apple TV+.
As tensions rise within the silo’s confined walls, McRae and Milner share insights into the evolving dynamics, hidden secrets, and the challenges their characters confront in the new season. From navigating complex relationships to uncovering the truths buried deep within the silo, the duo provides a glimpse into what lies ahead for fans.
Based on Howey’s New York Times bestselling trilogy “Wool,” “Silo” is the story of the last ten thousand people on Earth, their mile-deep home protecting them from the toxic and deadly world outside. However, no one knows when or why the silo was built and any who try to find out face fatal consequences. Rebecca Ferguson stars as Juliette, an engineer, who seeks answers about a loved one’s murder and tumbles onto a mystery that goes far deeper than she could have ever imagined, leading her to discover that if the lies don’t kill you, the truth will.
Creator and showrunner Graham Yost said the goal for season 2 was to go “deeper in story and in character.”
“The reason I was attracted to adapting the books is that Hugh Howey did a masterful job at setting up this big mystery of what the heck is going on? Why are people living in a silo?” Yost explained in an exclusive with EUR, adding, “…as the books went along, he parceled out the truth…so that gave us an incredible framework to follow.”
McRae’s character, Knox, demonstrates resilience in his role within the mechanics and inner workings of the silo, a position that becomes even more complex as his journey evolves in Season 2, especially with Shirley (Milner) by his side.
“I think at the beginning of the season, Knox has just turned Juliet in, and he’s done that because he felt like the burden of the community. I think Knox feels as leader of mechanical, he’s responsible for everyone’s livelihood, and he’s also a guy that feels like he can work within the system, and he’s kind of a system man at the beginning of the season and he thinks that if we just do this right, that people will do right by us,” McRae said.
“He learns as the season goes on that that’s not always true, and he learns it in a really harsh way. And Shirley’s on the opposite end of the spectrum,” he continued.
Milner added, “Shirley starts from a primal point where her best friend has just walked over the hill and might be alive. She feels she is alive, she’s holding on to that hope. She needs to figure out how that’s happened, how has no one else done that before,… where is she, how do we get her back? And that fuels her… she dives into it, she doesn’t hold anything back.” she explained,
“It might not always be the best way to go about things, and Knox often kind of levels her out a bit, and they end up working together to achieve some sense of finding out the truth and to kind of dissect this information that they’re being fed, which is lies, basically,” she said.
