*As we gear up for the premiere of Season 2 of “Shrinking,” Apple TV+’s hit dramedy, audiences can expect to see even more emotional depth, humor, and character development. Starring Jason Segel, who also serves as co-creator, writer, and executive producer, the series follows therapist Jimmy (Segel) as he navigates grief, personal growth, and ethical dilemmas.
With an incredible cast that includes Jessica Williams, Michael Urie, and Harrison Ford, *Shrinking* continues to balance the serious with the comedic in a way that resonates with viewers.
Premiering on October 16], “Shrinking” is ready to dive into the next chapter of Jimmy’s journey. Season 1 saw Jimmy break out of his dark hole of grief by pushing the boundaries of traditional therapy, telling his clients exactly what he thinks—consequences are not a concern. But, according to Segel, the new season asks the question: “What now?” In an exclusive interview with EUR, Jason Segel shared insights about what fans can expect in Season 2.
“Season 1 was about getting him out of this dark hole. And season two is, the now what,” Segel explained. “How do you proceed once you’re out of the immediate danger?”
Segel, known for his blend of comedy and emotional vulnerability, also highlighted the joy of making it to a second season:
“The other thing that’s exciting about making it to a season two is you get to expand the world of the other characters. Each of them gets the lead actor treatment for their episodes and arcs.”
Jessica Williams returns as Gaby, Jimmy’s co-worker and friend, and Michael Urie reprises his role as Brian, Jimmy’s best friend. Season 2 delves deeper into their stories, giving audiences a more intimate look at their personal and professional lives. Segel couldn’t praise his castmates enough:
“Jessica Williams and Michael Urie are geniuses, like proper comedic geniuses. Jessica has full episodes and arcs where we see what her character is dealing with… and Michael Urie shines like a comedy assassin this season.”
This season, Gaby faces dilemmas in her love life while Brian continues to navigate his close friendship with Jimmy. The expansion of their characters allows the cast to showcase their range, both in humor and emotional depth, which Segel called “the biggest joy of the season.”
A key element of “Shrinking” is the relationship between Jimmy and his daughter Alice, played by Lukita Maxwell. In Season 1, we saw the father-daughter dynamic flip, with Alice often stepping into a parental role as Jimmy struggled with his grief. By the end of the first season, Jimmy begins to repair that relationship, but Season 2 finds him facing the consequences of his earlier absence.
“Season Two, a lot of it is earning Alice’s forgiveness for his failing when she needed him most,” Segel said. Watching Jimmy try to make amends and support Alice as she matures is one of the emotional cores of the new season.
In addition to Segel, Williams, and Urie, “Shrinking”* stars Emmy Award nominee Christa Miller, Luke Tennie, Lukita Maxwell, and Ted McGinley.
Emmy Award-winning actor Harrison Ford also returns as Dr. Paul Rhoades, Jimmy’s mentor and a therapist battling his struggles. The cast will be joined by special guest star Brett Goldstein (*Ted Lasso*), who promises to bring even more comedic firepower to the series.
