*One of the artists behind Dwyane Wade’s new bronze Miami Heat statue in front of Kaseya Center responded to the criticism of the monument.
Oscar León of Rotblatt Amrany Studio collaborated with Omri Amrany on the newly unveiled sculpture commemorating Wade’s legacy. Per ABC News, the statue depicts Dwyane’s “This is my house” moment following a game-winning double-overtime shot against the Chicago Bulls in 2019. The sculpture received mixed reactions from fans who believe it doesn’t look like him. Oscar addressed negative reactions in a statement to NBC News. “To the critics, there’s a lot that needs to be understood,” he said.
“We have to seal everything to keep the integrity of the sculpture. However, that does create a funny little side effect of being glossy in areas that we are not used to seeing when we look at somebody in the flesh,” he continued.
“The sealer definitely creates a little bit of, um, a misunderstanding to the eye. So, I would definitely encourage everyone to come to Miami and view it in person,” he added.
Wade previously stated he he played a role in the statue’s creation and selected a significant moment from his career.
.
“If I wanted it to look like me, I’d just stand outside the arena and y’all can take photos,” Wade said in response to the criticism, according to ESPN. “It don’t need to look like me. It’s the artistic version of a moment that happened that we’re trying to cement.”
During the news conference after the statue’s unveiling, Wade shared his initial reaction to the monument. “I was just like, ‘That’s beautiful,’” he said, the Miami Herald reports.
“I’m biased, but I think it’s one of the best statues that’s been created because of what it represents for us and for me.” Wade continued.
“I care, but I don’t,” Wade said of the viral hate for his statue. “The social media world is about opinions. Everyone has an opinion. Everyone, use y’all opinions. Please talk more about us. Talk more about a statue, come on down to see it, take some photos, send some memes. We don’t care.”
