*At a recent Detroit union rally, Michigan Congresswoman Rashida Tlaib, the first Palestinian American woman in Congress, chose not to endorse Kamala Harris for the 2024 presidential election.
According to The Guardian, Tlaib’s fellow “Squad” members, Ayanna Pressley, Ilhan Omar, and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, endorsed the Democratic candidate in July. “Don’t underestimate the power you all have,” Tlaib said at a get-out-the-vote rally for United Auto Workers.
“More than those ads, those lawn signs, those billboards, you all have more power to turn out people that understand we’ve got to fight back against corporate greed in our country,” she added.
Meanwhile, a recent voter survey indicated that 43% of Muslim American voters currently support Green Party candidate Jill Stein.
Tlaib has been critical of the Democratic Party’s stance on the ongoing Isreal-Hama war. She previously said it was “hard not to feel invisible” after the party excluded a Palestinian American speaker from the DNC in Chicago in August. In an interview with Zeteo, the controversial congresswoman said the move “made it clear with their speakers that they value Israeli children more than Palestinian children”.
“Our trauma and pain feel unseen and ignored by both parties,” Tlaib added. “One party uses our identity as a slur, and the other refuses to hear from us. Where is the shared humanity? Ignoring us won’t stop the genocide.”
According to a survey from Cygnal, 57% of American Muslims said they believed Hamas “was justified in attacking Israel as part of their struggle for a Palestinian state.” In a letter to President Joe Biden, Tlaib and Democratic Representative Cori Bush argued that U.S. involvement in Israel’s war is unconstitutional, as it lacks Congressional authorization.
“In light of recent regional escalations, including exchanges in hostilities between Israel and Iran and the Israeli government’s ground invasions of Lebanon and Gaza, we are deeply concerned about the increasing role and involvement of the U.S. Armed Forces in expanding wars across the Middle East,” the letter states, per the Detroit Metro Times. “American military involvement in these wars has not been authorized by the United States Congress, as required by the Constitution and U.S. law.”
“The American people have made it clear that they want to see an immediate ceasefire, an end to these wars, and the return of hostages, not deepening American involvement in potentially endless regional war,” per the letter, which was signed by Tlaib’s fellow progressive Democrats André Carson, Ilhan Omar, and Summer Lee.
