*MMA legend Rener Gracie is instructing police officers on a new restraint technique that is allegedly safer than a chokehold.
He demonstrated this method on TMZ Live to emphasize its effectiveness. Rener, whose family created Brazilian jiu-jitsu, calls the move “SafeWrap,” and he is teaching it to the NYPD.
“SafeWrap” can “take down a noncomplying suspect safely and effectively … even if they are armed,” writes TMZ.
As Rener explains, “SafeWrap” is different from a chokehold because it involves restraining a person from their side, rather than pressing their chest to the ground, which can restrict breathing.

Here’s more from TMZ:
“Rener says there’s no lung or diaphragm compression with his method … unlike the chokehold … and he says the “SafeWrap” is super fast at getting someone to the ground and keeping them there. The move was originally designed for hospital patients.”
Rener intends to teach the “SafeWrap” technique to police departments across the country.
