*Queen Latifah is finally putting a spanner to the works for her life story, according to Variety. The new biopic is such a massive project that it will be subdivided into a series of movies, each possibly about hip-hop icons whose works influenced or impacted the rapper/singer/actress.
She and her Flavor Unit Entertainment partner Shakim Compere will produce the forthcoming movie with Westbrook Studios and Jesse Collins Entertainment (“The New Edition Story” and “The Bobby Brown Story”).
Will Smith and Miguel Melendez will produce for Westbrook Studios, Jesse Collins and Dionne Harmon will produce for Jesse Collins Entertainment, and Charlie Mack will also serve as a producer on the project.
In a statement announcing the project and the collaboration, the Grammy and Emmy winner and Oscar nominee praised Hip Hop’s impact.
“We all came into this industry together and Hip Hop has shaped every one of us,” read the joint statement by Latifah and Compere. “Hip Hop’s impact has expanded beyond just music and has created a lasting impression on culture and society overall. It is a dream to be able to collaborate with friends and colleagues that have not only a shared understanding but can tell these stories that were the backdrop of our lives.”
In 2022, Latifah teased that she was considering preparing a film version of the Dana Owens story.
“I actually have some things I’m cooking up,” she said then, according to a Variety report. “[But] I’ve got to break some of that up [into different projects]. There’s so many stories to tell.”
The project is among the list of iconic artist biopics that HarbourView Equity Partners has pledged to finance. Over 70 music catalogs and thousands of titles spanning numerous genres, eras, and artists are already lined up for potential development opportunities.
There are additional projects whose details will be released along the way.
