*School will be on a whole nother level when classes resume this fall at Morehouse College. HBCU Buzz reports the esteemed Atlanta-based HBCU will become the first university to introduce artificial intelligence (AI) teaching assistants.
At least five Morehouse professors are expected to integrate AI teaching assistants into their courses. News of the historical development was revealed by Dr. Muhsinah Morris, Morehouse’s Metaversity Director and Senior Professor in Education in a video shared on YouTube by VictoryXR, a leading platform that offers virtual reality immersive classrooms and campuses.
As part of the venture, Morehouse students will have access to AI teaching assistants that can handle assessments, conduct office hours, and provide 3D demonstrations, HBCU Buzz notes, adding. the AI teaching assistants will be available to students 24/7.
“These are different from chatbots because, one, they’re conversational. Two, they’re 3D, and you might just hear my AI TA speak Mandarin,” Dr. Morris said in the video. “The advantage of our AI TAs is that it allows for personalized learning for every scholar on their own schedules. This is the first deployment of fully functional AI TAs. Morehouse College led with Metaversities, and we are going to lead the world in bringing AI to the classroom. What we’re trying to do with these AI TAs is bring joy back to the classroom, ignite curiosity in our students, and get them to love learning no matter what time of day it is.”
Led by Morris, the game-changing effort comes amid a team effort that included faculty members Ovell Hamilton, Ethell Vereen Jr., and Tanya Clark. Morris and her team worked with VictoryXR.

Funding for the AI initiative was provided by Southern Company, Qualcomm, Meta, Unity, the National Science Foundation (NSF), and T-Mobile.
With AI teaching, around-the-clock support to students will be available as well as assistance with assignments and help for students trying to grasp complex concepts when professors are not available.
In addition, the AI teaching assistants are equipped with 3D capabilities that offer students interactive and engaging learning experiences. Morris emphasized the benefits of personalized learning in that it will ensure that each student can “learn at their own pace and according to their individual needs.”
Although a lot of pluses come with using AI teaching assistants, HBCU Buzz noted the minuses with the tech.
Among the concerns is potential job displacement for human teaching assistants, most notably seniors, and graduate students. The site pointed out a growing fear present that the integration of AI in education could phase out these traditional roles.
Morehouse’s AI actions mark the institution’s latest dalliance into carving technological firsts.
In 2022, Morehouse made history in digital education with becoming the first college to offer classes in the Metaverse.
