*North Carolina’s Republican candidate for governor, Mark Robinson, once suggested police should shoot prominent civil rights leader the Reverend Al Sharpton.
The Bulwark reports that back in 2009, Robinson made comments on a NewsOne article regarding a protest against police brutality that involved Sharpton, writing, “If the cops wanted to shoot an elderly black man they should have shot Al Sharpton. Closing his mouth would do this Nation good.”
Sharpton responded to the remarks by comparing Robinson to Donald Trump.
“This is a long line in despicable, self-hating, antisemitic rhetoric from a man who enjoys the support of Donald Trump and the Republican party,” Sharpton said in a statement. “Now, his candidate in that state has suggested cops shoot me instead of some other victim. It’s clear that someone’s life is expendable to them, especially if you disagree on the issues.”
CNN recently revealed that Robinson posted comments on a pornography site, referring to himself as a “Black NAZI” and expressing a wish to own slaves. According to the report, he said he enjoyed transgender pornography, and in 2012 Mark allegedly noted that he preferred Hitler to then-President Barack Obama. He also slammed the late Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. as “worse than a maggot.”
Despite these startling remarks, former Trump has not distanced himself from Robinson, even as Mark’s staff members have abruptly quit.
Robinson, who could become the state’s first Black governor if elected, has denied posting the messages that CNN claims date back more than a decade.
Meanhile, senior staff members in Robinson’s office announced plans to resign on Oct. 1, in the wake of the CNN report.
Per The New York Times, “… those resigning include Brian LiVecchi, the chief of staff and general counsel; Jonathan Harris, the policy director; John Wesley Waugh, the director of communications; and Nathan Lewis, the director of government affairs,” the publication writes.
