*“Don’t give up,” said Billboard Chart-topping Marcus Jordan about the message from his new single “I Can” (Marcus Jordan Music Group) “I wrote it to encourage people to never, never give up on your dreams. But I didn’t know it was for me!”
It is Marcus Jordan’s testimony based on several journeys he has taken that involved seeing your dream come true and then having to leave it for some reason. His role as keyboardist for Mathew Knowles’ Music World Entertainment House Band was the pentacle of success for him – being signed to the label home of Solange Knowles, Trinitee 5:7, and Angie Stone.
“We got dropped… at Music World,” Jordan said about his experience at the label that birthed Destiny’s Child. “Out of all the artists, I knew it wouldn’t be me. So, I was in a bad place….and I wrote this song.”
Regardless of the drop from the label, Marcus Jordan – a prodigy at seven – went outside his feelings and focused on his career in music. It was a hard long journey, but in 2021 he released the single “Call on The Name” and in 2023 it reached #1 on Billboard’s Gospel Chart. He is following that success with the release of the current single “I Can.”
“God did it. I’m able to travel the country and do what I love,” the three-time Voices of Gospel Music Award winner pointed out to me when discussing his career after the ousting at Music World Entertainment.
Marcus has a very fresh sound that, to me, sounds like a mixture of traditional Gospel and Jazz. He accomplished several dreams, to be a police officer was his dream which he served for a long time until recently when he decided to focus 100% on his music ministry.
Jordan is also a preacher’s child, who is a pastor himself at the St. Paul Missionary Baptist Church in Houston, Texas. He also serves as Minister of Music at the Outreach Missionary Baptist Church in Mineola, Texas.
“She actually said, ‘Why y’all didn’t tell me this fool could sing,’” Marcus said with a laugh when I asked about the legendary compliment that Solange Knowles gave him about his voice. “I’m a quartet baby. My mom had me singing with a group of ladies…three-part harmony.”
Those inspiring words from Solange gave Marcus Jordan the self-confidence to pick himself up and start again. He made such a musical impression that he served as a presenter at the 34th Stellar Gospel Music Awards. In 2017 he debuted with the single “You Are Here.” In 2021 his sophomore album “I Will Bless You” debuted at #3 on the Billboard Gospel Chart, and its single “Call on The Name” reached #1 on the Billboard Gospel Chart.
“My sophomore album was right when Covid hit,” he explained when I asked about his other music projects. “God saved my life….I couldn’t breathe. We have to build a strong relationship with Christ because we never know. In life…a great part is trials…we have to call on the Lord, He is faithful.”
