*LeBron James has been selected as Team USA’s male flagbearer for the Parade of Nations at the Paris Games on Friday, July 26.
The four-time NBA champion is the first men’s basketball player in history to carry the American flag at the Opening Ceremony, PEOPLE reports.
“It’s an incredible honor to represent the United States on this global stage, especially in a moment that can bring the whole world together,” James said in a statement shared by Team USA.
“For a kid from Akron, this responsibility means everything to not only myself, but to my family, all the kids in my hometown, my teammates, fellow Olympians and so many people across the country with big aspirations,” he continued.
“Sports have the power to bring us all together, and I’m proud to be a part of this important moment,” James added.
James will make his fourth appearance with Team USA this summer. He previously earned gold medals in London (2012) and Beijing (2008), and bronze in Athens (2004).
According to the Associated Press, Team USA’s female flagbearer will be announced on Tuesday, July 23.
The opening ceremony marking the official start of the Paris 2024 Olympics will take place on Friday, July 26 along the River Seine. However, sports events will kick off on Wednesday, July 24. The only new sport for the summer games is break dancing.
Medals will be awarded on July 27, and the competition will wrap up on August 11.
