Lawsuit Claims Woman, 80, Dies After Trapped in Sleep Number Bed | Video

*An Illinois woman has filed a lawsuit against the makers of Sleep Number beds, claiming her 80-year-old mother, Rosalind Walker, became trapped when the bed’s foundation unexpectedly lowered, pinning her between the bed and the wall for two days.

TooFab reports that Walker was rescued by first responders on March 3, 2023, and taken to the hospital for treatment of unspecified injuries. She was later transferred to a rehabilitation center, returned home, and placed under hospice care.

Walker passed away a month later on April 3, 2023. The woman’s daughter, Angela Moan, filed the lawsuit on December 10 in St. Louis County, where the bed was originally purchased before it was delivered to her mother’s home. She accuses the manufacturers of producing a defective product and breaching the bed’s 25-year warranty.

Per TooFab, the lawsuit argues that the Sleep Number bed “did not have adequate instructions or cautionary language in the instructions or on the bed, alerting Mrs. Walker not to go between the bed and the wall as she could be trapped.”

The lawsuit claims the Sleep Number bed was controlled by a timer and lacked a manual override, preventing Walker from freeing herself once trapped. It also alleges there was no audible warning before the bed began to lower.

A spokesperson for Sleep Number responded in a statement to KMOV: “Sleep Number is aware of the recent lawsuit filed against the company and Leggett and Platt, the manufacturer of its adjustable base.”

“The suit alleges that a malfunctioning adjustable base purchased in 2014 was a contributing factor in the death of Rosalind Walker,” the statement continued. “We understand that this incident is alleged to have occurred in March 2023; we were notified of the alleged incident after the lawsuit was filed yesterday, December 10. We extend our sincere condolences to the family of Ms. Walker for their tragic loss.”

Walker’s daughter is seeking $25,000 in damages for medical bills and pre-death suffering and has requested a jury trial.
