*We have an exclusive clip from this week’s episode of VICE TV’s “Black Comedy in America,” where Kevin Hart opens up about overcoming early setbacks and refining his comedic voice to rise as one of Hollywood’s top comedians and movie stars.
As we reported, “Black Comedy in America” is a new docuseries produced by SMAC Productions and She Ready Productions and hosted by comedians Tiffany Haddish, Chris Spencer and Ryan Davis. The series explores the lore and legends of Black comedy and offers a definitive look at the history and impact of America’s most prolific Black comedians.
The 10-episode series brings together icons and respected figures for deep dives into what and who have shaped comedy and American culture over the past century, including many who have used their comedic visions to push boundaries in the face of controversies in an ever-changing society.
“This collection of comedians and their stories presents an expansive, yet intimate look at the setbacks, triumphs and cultural inroads blazed by the most incredible comedians the world has ever known” said Pete Gaffney, VICE Media’s President, Global TV. “We are glad to do our part in shining a light on these legends with a project that is both ambitious and historical.”
Watch Hart open up about his journey in the clip below.
Meanwhile, we asked comedian Chris Spencer how he envisions “Black Comedy in America” inspiring the next generation of comics.
“I think what’s going to be great is they’re going to see their icons in a more humanistic way. You’re going to hear about their struggles, their fears, the things that make them excited, to hear that some of them have butterflies, even though they’re box office, chart-winning comedians who are selling out arenas and stadiums around the world. They still have trepidation about this art form at times,” he explained.
Spencer added, “And so for a young budding comedian that’s like, I don’t know if I want to do this because every time I go on stage I get butterflies, just know that Chris Rock might also get butterflies. Dave Chappelle might also get butterflies. And that feeling may not ever go away, but you have to figure out a way to conquer it so that you can be as successful as them.”
“Black Comedy in America” airs on December 10PM ET/PT on VICE TV.
