*WNBA star Jonquel Jones recently opened up about her choice to play overseas, where she earns significantly more than in the WNBA.
Speaking on The Pivot Podcast, the Finals MVP noted that the league’s salary structure motivates her decision to pursue international contracts.
“Financially, it’s good, but it could be better,” Jones said about her $208,075 annual salary with the Liberty, per Essentially Sports. She explained that her earnings overseas with teams in South Korea, Russia, and Turkey far exceed what she makes in the U.S.
“Obviously I still play overseas um and I still make way more money overseas than I do um in the WNBA or with my marketing if that was combined I still make way more money.”
Jones also stated, “For me but like when I leave the league I want I want players to be able to not have to go overseas and be able to make that type of money here you know in the US with their families and loved ones so yeah I think that’s the growing point.”
Jones’ comments follow similar remarks made by Chicago Sky player Angel Reese who said in a viral video that her earnings from the WNBA barely cover her rent.
As we reported earlier, during a recent Instagram Live, Reese said the league doesn’t cover her major expenses.
“Hating pays them bills, baby. I just hope you know the WNBA don’t pay my bills at all,” she said. “I don’t even think that pays one of my bills. Literally, I’m trying to think of my rent for where I stay at. Let me do the math real quick. I don’t even know my [WNBA] salary. $74,000?”
After a friend calculated that Reese’s salary doesn’t cover her $8,000 rent, the LSU alum said: “I’m living above my means!”
“Babe, if y’all thought… That WNBA check don’t pay a thing. Did that even pay my car note?… I wouldn’t even be able to eat a sandwich with that. I wouldn’t even be able to eat. I wouldn’t be able to live,” Reese added.
