*The indie drama “Magazine Dreams” starring Jonathan Majors, is set to hit theaters next year.
Briarcliff Entertainment has acquired the U.S. rights to Elijah Bynum’s film and is planning a theatrical release for early 2025, IndieWire reports. “Magazine Dreams” originally premiered at Sundance in 2023 and was first picked up by Searchlight Pictures. However, after Majors’ conviction on assault and harassment charges, the studio pulled it from its release schedule and put it back on the market.
Majors received glowing praise for his “powerhouse” performance as Killian Maddox, a troubled man who dreams of bodybuilding superstardom. Here is the Sundance Film Festival synopsis of the film: “Killian Maddox lives with his ailing veteran grandfather, obsessively working out between court-mandated therapy appointments and part-time shifts at a grocery store where he harbors a crush on a friendly cashier.”
The description continues, “Though Killian’s struggles to read social cues and maintain control of his volatile temper amplify his sense of disconnection amid a hostile world, nothing deters him from his fiercely protected dream of bodybuilding superstardom, not even the doctors who warn that he’s causing permanent damage to his body with his quest.”
In a statement, Briarcliff CEO Tom Ortenberg said, “Magazine Dreams is a visceral experience that challenges the perceptions of ambition and identity. Elijah’s film made a well-deserved splash in Sundance and Briarcliff is looking forward to taking his story to the big screen across the country in early 2025.”
Ortenberg continued: “Jonathan Majors’ transcendent performance as Killian Maddox will undoubtedly be remembered as one of the most compelling and transformative roles in recent cinema history. We are honored to bring this extraordinary work to theaters nationwide, inviting audiences to witness a story that will resonate long after the credits roll.”
Majors is an executive producer on the film along with Luke Rodgers and Andrew Blau for Los Angeles Media Fund, with Jennifer Fox, Dan Gilroy, Jeffrey Soros, and Simon Horsman serving as producers.
“We are thrilled to be working with Tom again after a terrific collaboration on ‘Nightcrawler’,” Fox said.
“Tom has made a career of championing compelling, boundary-pushing films and filmmakers that stand the test of time, so we couldn’t have stronger partners to release ‘Magazine Dreams’ than him and the great team at Briarcliff,” Soros said.
