*Prime Video’s latest thriller series, “Cross,” is based on James Patterson’s iconic character Alex Cross, and is already making waves as fans eagerly anticipate its November 14 premiere.
In this adaptation, we see Aldis Hodge as Alex Cross, alongside Isaiah Mustafa, who brings to life the character of “John Sampson,” Cross’s childhood friend and steadfast partner on the force.
In a recent interview with EUR, Mustafa shared insights into John’s role in Alex’s life, their deep-rooted bond, and what creating an authentic friendship on screen was like. Mustafa revealed that John Sampson and Alex Cross aren’t just partners but family.
“They grew up together. John’s from the foster system, and Alex lost his parents. Nana Mama [Alex’s grandmother] raised both of them, so they’re more like brothers,” he said, emphasizing the significance of their unique relationship. “They grew up in the same household…just like brothers do. They had their arguments, they had their fun times, but what they learned was how to have each other’s back,” he explained.
As “Cross” dives into Alex’s complex and often dangerous world, John’s unwavering support and loyalty become a critical part of the series, offering Alex camaraderie and a sense of grounding amid his intense personal and professional challenges.
“When they decided to become police officers and join the Academy, they made a choice together. They knew they’d need someone to watch their back,” Mustafa shared.
“Cross” isn’t the conventional story we’ve seen of the character “Alex Cross.” Mustafa noted, “It’s a love story about friendship between two men who really trust each other. It’s not something you often see, especially in a line of work where emotions are kept under wraps.” John Sampson, he said, brings a special balance and “levity” to Alex’s life, helping him see beyond the stress of the job and encouraging him to face his demons.
This dynamic friendship allows for some deeply honest moments between Alex and John, with Sampson not afraid to ask the tough questions. “There’s something powerful about having a friend who’s willing to call you out, hold you up to your highest power,” Mustafa reflected. “It’s not an easy conversation to have, but John’s got Alex’s back no matter what. He’s not afraid to say, ‘I don’t think you’re doing so well right now.’”
Mustafa and Hodge built their on-screen chemistry through mutual respect and shared life experiences. Though the two hadn’t met before filming, Mustafa recalls an instant connection during their chemistry read.
“I think we both had a mutual respect as artists,” he said. With his three decades in the industry, Hodge became someone Mustafa could lean on. “I haven’t been in the industry that long, so if I have a question, I’ll ask him,” he said.
Mustafa shared that one of the pivotal bonding moments happened off-set, where he, Hodge, series creator Ben Watkins, and producer Blaze Watkins shared “one of the best conversations you could have, just about life.” This time together, learning about each other’s backgrounds and discussing what it’s like being Black men in different cities, cemented the bond between the actors. “We were having tequila, sharing stories… those bonding moments helped us create the friendship of Alex and John.”
“Cross” will be available to stream on Prime Video on November 14.
