*In northwest Houston, a mother is speaking out in desperation as she seeks justice for her daughter, who was violently attacked on the night of September 29. Javoni Fortner, a 31-year-old mother of five and dedicated worker juggling two jobs, was targeted in a shocking incident that has left her fighting for her life in the hospital.
On that fateful evening, Javoni returned home from a “paint and sip” event, where she aimed to unwind and practice a little self-care. Little did she know that a terrifying confrontation awaited her outside her apartment complex, KHOU-11 reports.
After being dropped off by a rideshare, police reports state that a man in a dark sedan followed her into the complex. Upon her exit from the vehicle, he violently assaulted her using a bat or a club, leaving her with severe injuries.
“She went to do something for herself and ended up in a fight for her life,” said Shameka Fortner, Javoni’s mother. In an emotional interview, Fortner recalled the horrifying moment she received a frantic phone call from her daughter, who was hysterical and crying out for help. “I heard her being hysterical in her voice and she just was calling out ‘Mom, mom, someone tried to beat me to death with a bat.’”
Though Javoni did not see her attacker, there are fears that the suspect is someone familiar to her. “He has been making threats towards my daughter; this wasn’t some random attack,” Fortner revealed. “This man was someone she rejected, not even a boyfriend.”
“The capture of this person needs to be a top priority. There’s no telling how many times he’s done this,” Fortner implored. Recognizing the seriousness of the situation, the family has set up a GoFundMe page to assist with medical expenses, showcasing their resilience and need for community support.
“My daughter is currently still in the hospital, and we’re grateful she’s alive,” Fortner said, reflecting on the gravity of the incident. “But she will be disabled for the rest of her life. As a mom, as long as she’s in good spirits, I’m in good spirits.”
The Fortner family continues to seek justice and healing while encouraging the community to unite in the fight against such violent acts.
