*Man, do newlyweds Shundra Johnson and Leonard Stepheny have a story to tell. They found themselves in a traumatic accident on what should have been a joyful journey to their honeymoon. Instead of boarding their Amtrak train at Chicago’s Union Station, the couple ended up on the tracks, leading to both physical and emotional scars that still haunt them today.
Traumatic Incident Unfolds on the Platform
The incident occurred in June when Johnson and Stepheny were being transported to their train in a passenger cart, similar to a golf cart. Video footage captures the moment as Johnson recalls feeling the bumps beneath them while approaching the platform’s caution area. Just as she was about to turn to her husband, tragedy struck.
“We could start to feel, underneath us, bumps, where the caution, the yellow caution is on the platform,” Johnson said. “And as soon as I was getting ready to turn and look at my husband, the cart fell onto the train tracks.”
Stepheny sensed something was wrong even before the cart tipped over. “You could hear the tire go blub, blub, blub,” he described, noting the driver paid no attention to it. In a shocking moment, the cart fell, leaving Johnson with severe injuries, CBS Chicago reported.

The Aftermath: Injury and Despair
As Johnson plummeted, her head struck the track, and she felt the weight of the cart pressing down on her.
“In that moment, as I’m going down, all I could think is I’ve got to protect my head—but it wasn’t enough time to raise my arms,” Johnson recounted. Trapped beneath the cart, her immediate thought was for her safety but all she could hear was her husband’s frantic calls, “Are you OK! Are you OK!”
“It was one of the scariest moments in my life,” he said, detailing his efforts to lift the cart off his wife, while in shock. “I’m looking at her trapped under the thing, so I didn’t have no regard about my safety or anything.”
Health Struggles and Legal Actions Ahead
After the accident, which involved both a passenger cart and a luggage cart attached to it, the couple sought medical attention at the ER nearly seven hours later. Despite their injuries, they decided to continue their honeymoon in Missouri, though it turned into a painful experience. Johnson described her suffering, saying, “My whole lower body was bruised up from the impact,” while Stepheny faced surgery for a torn bicep and rotator cuff.
With ongoing medical treatments and therapy for both physical and mental health, the couple is now considering legal action. Their lawyer is contemplating a lawsuit against Amtrak, hoping to find accountability for the incident.

Amtrak’s Response to the Incident
When reached for comment regarding the incident and the employee involved, Amtrak confirmed that it is an active case being handled by its claims unit. However, they did not provide further details on the training protocols for their transport employees or any specific actions taken since the incident.
Shundra Johnson and Leonard Stepheny’s honeymoon-turned-nightmare serves as a grim reminder of the potential dangers in the transportation industry and raises critical questions about safety measures and employee training in such settings. As they navigate their recovery, the couple’s story continues to echo their experience of fear, injury, and the quest for justice.
