Ethan Herisse and Brandon Wilson star in RaMell Ross‘ “Nickel Boys.”
The historical drama follows two young men sent to a brutal reform school in Florida during Jim Crow.
We spoke to the fellas about filming in first person and the horrors of the 1960s.
Q: When researching the Dozier School for Boys, was there anything shocking you discovered?
EH: Is it sad to say, ‘no?’ I was mostly disappointed [by the way I found out about this reform school because I didn’t] learn about it in a class or a conversation with friends. This school is something most people really don’t know about, and that’s a shame. That’s disappointing. So I wasn’t shocked that the atrocities took place, especially during that time. I was more disappointed that I didn’t know about it sooner.
BW: Similarly, no shock. When you hear about injustices of any kind, especially with children, it’s not pleasant to learn about. History has presented stories like this over and over again.
Q: How was looking down the lens of a camera while acting different than looking at another person when acting?
EH: It’s difficult to connect. You have to rely only on the other actor’s voice, and you have to also rely on the work you’ve done beforehand. And then it’s just letting go…like this isn’t a camera in front of me. This is Brandon’s face, and this is how he…Based on his voice, this is what I’m seeing. It sounds like you’re gaslighting yourself a little bit, but when you’re in it and you’re present, it really does feel that way. It all melts away and you’re able to see a face in there.
Amazon MGM Studios “Nickel Boys” will have a limited theatrical release starting December 13.
