*”Whoah!” That was our first reaction upon learning of the surprising revelation, music legend Elton John disclosed that he has lost his eyesight after battling a severe eye infection.
The 77-year-old superstar made the poignant announcement during a charity gala performance of “The Devil Wears Prada: The Musical” at the Dominion Theatre in London on Sunday night, where he addressed an audience that included fashion moguls and friends.
“As some of you may know, I have had issues and now I have lost my sight. I haven’t been able to see the performance, but I have enjoyed listening to it,” John shared with the crowd, reflecting on his recent difficulties, according to reports from the BBC.
The iconic artist took a moment to express his gratitude towards his husband, David Furnish, who has been a steadfast support during this challenging time.
“To my husband, who’s been my rock, because I haven’t been able to come to many of the previews, it’s hard for me to see, but I love to hear it,” John heartfeltly stated, adding, “And, boy, it sounded good tonight! OK! Thank you for coming!”

John also played a pivotal role in the production by writing the original score for “The Devil Wears Prada: The Musical,” which features Tony nominee Vanessa Williams as the formidable Miranda Priestly.
The charity event attracted a glittering array of guests, including Anna Wintour, editor-in-chief of Vogue, actress Lily Collins, and model Elizabeth Hurley, underscoring the musical’s high-profile launch.
This announcement comes after John previously disclosed in September that he had “limited vision in one eye” due to the aforementioned severe eye infection he endured over the summer while in the South of France.
“I am healing, but it’s an extremely slow process and it will take some time before sight returns to the impacted eye,” he had noted earlier.
In a recent interview with Robin Roberts on Good Morning America, John elaborated on the impact of his health struggles.
“I, unfortunately, lost my eyesight in my right eye in July because I had an infection… and it’s been four months now since I haven’t been able to see.” He expressed cautious optimism regarding his left eye, stating, “There’s hope and encouragement that it will be OK, but I’m kind of stuck at the moment…”
Elton John’s artistic contributions and resilience in the face of adversity continue to inspire fans and fellow artists alike. His enduring legacy in the music world serves as a testament to his tremendous talent and spirit.
