*While many a musician dreams of headlining the Super Bowl Halftime Show, Drake has the guts to turn down such an offer. The five-time Grammy Award-winning artist has turned down such an offer not once but twice, according to music executive Steve Stoute.
Speaking on “The Pivot” podcast, Stoute revealed that it’s Drake who declined Jay-Z’s offer to perform at this season’s Super Bowl.
Jay-Z has been in charge of picking the Super Bowl Halftime performers since Roc Nation – a famous music publishing and management company – partnered with the NFL in 2019.
“I will confirm: Drake was offered the Super Bowl twice. Drake did turn down the Super Bowl twice,” Stoute said. “And I’m sure if Drake would have said yes, he would have brought Lil Wayne out at some point, right? He probably would have brought out Nicki (Minaj).”
The 2024 NFL season is now underway, and the program is already in place, with Kendrick Lamar set to headline this season’s Super Bowl Halftime Show, according to the NFL’s announcement on Sept 8. Headlining the Super Bowl is an honor no one turns down so easily. After all, the game is one of the most-watched events in the world. Consider that an average of 123.7 million viewers across all platforms watched the game last year.
It’s unclear why Drake turned down such an honor. According to Stoute, Drake just “didn’t want to do it.”
Drake is behind great hits such as “God’s Plan,” “Nice For What,” and “One Dance.” He currently attracts 76.1 million listeners per month on Spotify. So, being such an influential figure in the music industry, it’s not surprising that he has been considered for the honor twice.
It’s after Drake turned down the offer that Jay-Z brought in Lamar.
