*Conrad Ricamora, known for his performances on stage and screen, is stepping into a unique role as Rory on Hulu‘s latest hit series, “How To Die Alone.” In an exclusive interview with EUR, Ricamora delved into his character’s complex relationships, the emotional depth of the show, and the balance between comedy and serious issues like loneliness and connection.
When asked what drew him to the character of Rory, Ricamora’s response highlighted the universal theme of belonging.
“I think Rory finds a sense of belonging with Mel, portrayed by Nathasa Rothwell,” he shared. “That’s something he’s been looking for his entire life, being an Asian boy adopted by a rich, white, Upper East Side family that he never felt a part of. He finds a shared sense of humor with Mel, but it really boils down to that sense of acceptance and belonging.”
This sense of feeling like an outsider and seeking meaningful connections resonates not only with Ricamora’s character but also with many viewers. In How To Die Alone, Rothwell, who also created the show, explores how people search for belonging and love in a world where it’s often hard to find.
Much of the conversation with Ricamora revolved around the show’s delicate balance of serious topics with comedy. He explained that Rothwell has mastered the art of creating deeply complex and hilarious characters.
“Natasha is showing us over and over again that she can do comedy that is grounded in reality, with three-dimensional characters. A lot of times, comedy can be very surface-level, but Natasha is bringing this experience of comedy that is well-rounded and holistic.”
When discussing Rory’s character arc, Ricamora pointed out the complexity behind Rory’s bravado and humor, particularly regarding relationships.
“Especially in the gay community, we prize and celebrate being free, maybe too much so when it comes to commitments. Rory embodies that, but it’s just a front because deep down, he wants a meaningful relationship.”
Throughout the series, Rory’s relationship with Ben (played by Glenn Fleary) takes center stage. Ricamora explained how the show explores how meaningful changes in one’s life can impact friendships and family dynamics, saying:
“When you start making meaningful change, it pushes up against those relationships, and whether those relationships survive or not is the true test of whether they were meant to be in your life.”
Given that much of the show occurs at JFK Airport, Ricamora shared a behind-the-scenes insight into what filming in such a hectic, public place is like.
“I will never be able to walk through an airport the same way again,” he laughed. “We’re always so stressed at airports, but there’s a whole culture of people working in different capacities. I loved learning about the rooms where confiscated foods and items end up. I really want to visit one of those rooms!”
