*Allow her to reintroduce the Black Lives Matter Global Network Foundation(BLMGNF). The civil rights organization’s newly appointed chairwoman Cicley Gay is out to spearhead a significant rebrand by celebrating Black lives more than mourning Black death.
Chatting with Madame Noire at the official Welcome to Atlanta InvestFest and Black Lives Matter meet and greet event, Gay outlined the rebrand, as it will include a new website, logo, and a renewed commitment to the Black community.
“We’re asking people to allow us to reintroduce ourselves,” she said at the official Welcome to Atlanta InvestFest and Black Lives Matter meet and greet event
Gay’s more than 20 years of nonprofit and philanthropic experience in her new role, will be put to the test with a clear vision for the future of BLM’s future.
News of the BLM rebrand comes as the organization tries to rebound from a series of controversies surrounding its former leader, Patrisse Cullors.
According to Madame Noire, Cullors faced backlash after it was revealed that BLM was revealed to have bought a $6 million Los Angeles property. The revelation opened the door to allegations of financial mismanagement.
In her defense, Cullors has since defended the purchase, stating BLM was unprepared for the surge in donations it received following George Floyd’s death in 2020.
With the setbacks, Madame notes that a new chapter is present for BLM with Gay at the helm, in working to get the organization away from past criticisms to lay what it calls “a strong foundation for the future.”
The site highlighted “her extensive background in nonprofit work, including roles at the NAACP Legal Defense Fund and the National CARES Mentoring Movement,” as a plus that “makes her well-equipped to navigate this challenging period.”
To get to her goal, Gay looks to be financially committed to Black communities via support in the arts, education, research, policy, and culture. The civil rights leader’s objective is to work to change thoughts on BLM to those centering away from Black Death, in favor of celebrating the richness and diversity of Black culture while upholding its mission of advocating for Black rights.
