*Winsome Sinclair, the influential casting director known for her work on films like “Waiting to Exhale,” “Amistad,” and “Precious,” has passed away at the age of 58.
Sinclair died in hospice care after a long battle with colon cancer. She was surrounded by family at her bedside, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Sinclair founded Winsome Sinclair and Associates in 1996 and later moved the agency to Atlanta in 2014. Her extensive career included casting for John Singleton’s “Higher Learning” and Malcolm D. Lee’s “The Best Man” and a dozen films directed by Spike Lee.
Sinclair, born in Jamaica and raised in Long Island, also produced films, including “Maynard,” a 2017 documentary about Maynard Jackson Jr., the first Black mayor of Atlanta. She also authored the 2020 book, “You Are My SONshines” inspired by her adopted children.
A GoFundMe has been set up to help her kids. A message on the campaign page states: Our sweet angel Winsome Sinclair was a “woman of the word”. She believed deeply in “radical faith” and lived her life in that way. She touched so many lives in the film and entertainment industry, and the prayer community to which she was a member. She left behind two wonderful and bright sons: Micah and Kairo. They would sincerely benefit from your giving towards their upbringing and education – in loving memory of Winsome. Anything would be appreciated. God bless you.
Producer and publicist Cassandra Butcher wrote in an Instagram post that Sinclair “brought light to everyone she encountered, with a unique ability to see more in people than they could see in themselves.”
Butcher added, “A true fan of life and culture, her passion for the arts and her deep love for family and community will continue to inspire those who know her. Winsome’s legacy in the film industry and the lives she touched will live on, reminding us of her vibrant spirit and the stories she helped bring to life.”
