*Blair Underwood stars as FBI Agent Carter in the eerie “Longlegs.” And what a comeuppance from the first time I interviewed him. It was for “Just Cause.” Underwood’s character (Bobby Earl Ferguson) in that film was in prison for rape and murder. Ferguson’s lawyer was Paul Armstrong (Sean Connery).
Nicolas Cage’s role as a satanic serial killer in “Longlegs” is also juxtaposed to a prior performance. In one of the most moving romantic movies ever made, Cage stars as an angel. In “City of Angels,” Cage falls in love with a mortal (Meg Ryan).
Although his first time dipping into the horror genre, Underwood is relishing every drop of blood and the terror that comes with it. “Longlegs” has the extra added appeal of the supernatural and the occult. The satanic elements had Underwood praying hard before, on, and after he left the set. I, like, Underwood, believe unseen forces and elements are inhabiting this universe.
And let us not forget the other side of the horror spectrum. “Longlegs” legacy director Osgood Perkins’ father is Anthony Perkins. Both Anthony and Janet Leigh (mother of scream queen Jamie Lee Curtis) starred in Alfred Hickock’s much-touted “Psycho.”
Osgood calls “Longlegs” a movie with “many veils.” He points out that even Agent Harker (Maika Monroe), who works closely with Agent Carter, might be entwined with Longlegs.
Watching “Longlegs,” I could not stop thinking about the film, “Se7en,” with the cryptic notes and bible references. Morgan Freeman and Brad Pitt go after serial killer Kevin Spacey who is targeting people, he thinks represent one of the deadly seven sins. Agent Harker’s mother is a religious zealot. She asks Harker is she says her prayers every day.
The frightening “Longlegs, now in theaters, opens itself up to a sequel.
