*In a tragic incident that has attorneys, family members, and the public demanding answers, Sonya Massey was shot and killed by Sean Grayson, a deputy from the Sangamon County, Illinois Sheriff’s office as we’ve previously reported. The case has gained significant attention, with prominent civil rights attorney Ben Crump representing the Massey family in their pursuit of justice.

Grayson claims he acted in self-defense, fearing Massey would throw a pot of boiling water at him. However, police body cam footage has cast doubts over his account. Watching the tape has led Massey’s family and their attorney to reject the deputy’s explanation.

Appearing on “TMZ Live” alongside Sonya’s father, James Wilburn, Crump highlighted what he sees as glaring inconsistencies in Grayson’s story.

Notably, the footage shows Grayson moving toward Sonya as she handled the pot, rather than away—a move Crump believes was made to get a clearer shot.

Critically, after firing three shots, including a fatal one to Massey’s head, Grayson instructed his partner not to administer medical aid as she lay bleeding on her kitchen floor. This, the family argues, further underscores Grayson’s indifference and contradicts his supposed fear for safety.

The Illinois State Police have reviewed the incident and concluded that Grayson’s use of force was unjustified. Still, for Sonya’s father, the pain runs deep. Initially misled about the nature of the shooting, James Wilburn never imagined his daughter would join the tragic list of Black individuals fatally shot by police, such as George Floyd and Breonna Taylor. He reveals that the emotional strain from the incident has taken a significant toll on his health, threatening his well-being even more severely if not for a recent bypass surgery.

Crump denounces Grayson’s defense, labeling it “asinine” and pledging to hold the deputy accountable. As the investigation and legal proceedings unfold, Sonya Massey’s family remains steadfast in their fight for justice, hoping their loss will not be in vain, and will contribute to the broader call for systemic change in policing practices.

The case serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing issues surrounding police use of force, especially toward the Black community, and spotlights the crucial need for transparency, accountability, and reform in law enforcement. As Ben Crump and James Wilburn continue their campaign for justice, the hope is that their efforts will inspire legislative and societal changes that honor Sonya Massey’s life and prevent future tragedies.
