*The hero is the sandwich in Clyde’s,” a twisted and clever comedy by Lynn Nottage is now showing at the Mark Taper Forum through December 18, 2022.

The plot revolves around the psychology of food and the powerplays of the people hired to make the food.

Set in a roadside truck stop, Clyde (played by Tamberla Perry) is the tyrannical owner who rules by fear and intimidation.

Her staff of ex-cons bemoan their plight in life and grudgingly proceed about their daily duties while they compete to make the best sandwich.

Clyde’s has a recipe’ of quick deli style dialogue, tart inner conflict and spicey dramatic combustion as Montrellous (Kevin Kenerly), Letitia (Nedra Snipes), Raphael (Reza Salazar) and Jason (Garrett Young) chop, slice, dice and spread their frustrations into edible works of art, while fearing Clyde’s next threat of immediate termination.

Cheap labor with a sordid past is not protected by human resources, so this anguished mix of characters must prevail every time the diner bell rings and another other meal must be served with lightning speed.

If the menu calls for something different for a night out at the theatre, director Kate Whoriskey provides poetic justice to another notable work by Lynn Nottage.

“Clyde’s” was a highlight of last year’s Broadway season, and our partnership with the Goodman Theatre allows us to bring this outstanding production to Los Angeles,” said Center Theatre Group Managing Director / CEO Meghan Pressman.

“Clyde’s” will be the second time we have produced Lynn’s work in Los Angeles, and we are thrilled to bring this bold, engaging, and entertaining play to our audiences for its West Coast premiere.” Center Theatre Group Associate Artistic Director Lindsay Allbaugh said, “We are beyond excited to welcome Lynn Nottage, one of the premiere playwrights of our time, back to Center Theatre Group with the West Coast premiere of ‘Clyde’s.’

From the moment we read the first draft, we knew we wanted to bring this production to Los Angeles. The characters and the story spoke to us – a tale of redemption, second chances, finding passion through the art of food, and, yes, sandwiches. Lynn reminds us once again why she is the most-produced playwright in the country.
