*A coalition of Los Angeles civil rights leaders are calling for Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascon to file criminal charges and prosecute LAPD Officer for the December 23rd, 2021 killing of Valentina Orellana-Peralta.
Orellana-Peralta, who was 14 at the time of her death, was hiding in a dressing room with her mother at the Burlington Coat Factory store as a suspect the LAPD was in search of continued to roam the store.
Officer William Dorsey Jones Jr. fired his assault rifle and missed his target and killed Valentina instead. Valentina’s death sparked international news coverage with sorrow and grief from Los Angeles to her native Chile and prompted L.A. Mayor Eric Garcetti to pledge to her mother that the city would deliver “transparency and justice” in piecing together the events that led to her killing.
LAPD Chief Michel Moore, recommended the LAPD police commission find Officer Jones’s decision to shoot was unreasonable and violated the LAPD’s policy on deadly force.

“Just days before Christmas Valentina Orellana-Peralta was trying on Quinceanera dresses with her mom when LAPD officer William Dorsey Jones Jr. Started shooting at a suspect outside the dressing rooms. A stray bullet from officer Jones struck and killed Valentina. Her death was preventable!
Our legal team demands justice and accountability from the City of Los Angeles and the LAPD” “Stated the Valentina family attorney Ben Crump one of the most influential and prominent lawyers in the nation.
Now that LAPD Chief Moore and the LAPD police commission have found officer Jones Jr guilty of a violation of department rules in the killing of 14-year-old Valentina Orellana-Peralta. It’s critical to that Los Angeles District Attorney George Gascon file criminal charges and holds him accountable for unnecessarily killing a child.
Officer Jones Jr. is an African-American officer but it makes no difference to Black activists. We want and demand justice for all victims of unnecessary police violence and killing of innocent people, especially children ” stated Najee Ali.
“Many residents and activists of Los Angeles County voted for Gascon demanding change because of the cowardly actions of former L.A.D.A
Jackie Lacey and her complete failure to hold law enforcement accountable for anything. It’s critical that DA George Gascon take action and file some type of criminal charges against Officer Jones Jr especially now that LAPD Chief Moore and the police commission have found him guilty of a violation of department rules Stated ” Cliff Smith of Community Control Over The Police.
