*One of the activities that people often associate with A-list celebrities is luxurious international travel. Justin Bieber is over 7 years removed since his DUI in Miami, but that arrest could still cause potential issues for the pop star if he wants to travel into Canada, where the country has some DUI travel restrictions that are tougher than other places in the world.

Traveling to Canada with a DUI on your record can be a dicey situation. According to CanadianImmigration.com, if you have previously been convicted for a DUI, you may be “criminally inadmissible to Canada.” Being the difference in severity of crime and punishment depending on where you are coming from, it is not a black and white issue to enter the country.

For Justin Bieber, he does have some positives in terms of DUI travel restrictions. First, Canada does allow for travelers to petition for criminal rehabilitation if it has been more than 5 years since the incident, and show that the offender has worked towards resolving any fines, sentencing, or probation that they may have had to undergo. Second, being that he is Canadian, the restrictions are often looser for those who were born there and are often given more leeway than foreigners if they are wanting to travel into Canada.

An Up and Down Period

The incident in question came after quite a successful couple of years for the young musician. After the extremely successful release of his album Believe in 2012, he spent much of the following year on an international tour. Along with the tour, he also starred in the concert film Believe, which followed him along on tour and gave an inside look for those who weren’t able to attend themselves. This was the second film about the star’s career, following up to the 2011 box office hit, Never Say Never, which pulled in nearly $100 million.

However, the highs of 2013 led to a very low start to 2014 when the arrest took place, making it all the more glaring in comparison to his wildly popular tour from the previous year.

The DUI was not his only run in with authorities that year – the young singer found himself in trouble with the Canadian police when he was arrested for assault and reckless driving after an altercation with paparazzi that stemmed from a collision between his ATV and a minivan. He was later found guilty on both charges for the incident. Coming just a few months after his arrest in Miami, this was definitely a bad mark on his record in terms of his Canada travel restriction issues.

But this was just another example of the reckless era of life that he was in at the time, but has since found a new lifestyle.

Time for Reflection

One positive, though, is that he has not shied away from his errors in the past (t. On the anniversary of the infamous date, the music star posted on his Instagram account a picture of the arrest. “7 years ago today I was arrested, not my finest hour. Not proud of where I was at in my life. I was hurting, unhappy, confused, angry, misled, misunderstood and angry at God. I also wore too much leather for someone in Miami,” he continued.

“All this to say God has brought me a long way. From then until now I do realize something.. God was as close to me then as he is right now. My encouragement to you to you is to ‘let your past be a reminder of how far God has brought you. Don’t allow shame to ruin your ‘today’ let the forgiveness of Jesus take over and watch your life blossom into all that God has designed you to be. LOVE YOU GUYS WITH MY WHOLE HEART.”

Lots of superstars of that magnitude have too much ego to return to a period of darkness like that, so it is refreshing to see honesty like that. Along with the self-forgiveness, he also received plenty of support on the post from other celebrities. Some of those who sent their well wishes include his wife Hailey Bieber, Tom Brady, Kevin Hart, Usher, and a handful of others.

It is certainly nice to see a rebound story like this. Far too often we hear stories of household names that go down a similar path, but never find their way out. So for somebody like him to have gotten things together and found a stable lifestyle for all these years is an excellent resolve to his prior problems.

Now that Justin Bieber has passed the 5 year period that it takes to get past the Canada travel restrictions he shouldn’t have too much trouble getting back into his home country. This is a positive story for anybody who might be having to deal with DUI travel restrictions themselves, and how to move on from a situation like that.
