Athletes, Actors & Influencers: Standing Up for Democracy in Florida

FRRC1

*A growing number of athletes, actors and other influencers across the country are standing up for Democracy and supporting the Florida Rights Restoration Coalition (FRRC) work to restore the voting rights to 1.4M returning citizens in the state of Florida. Some examples are below.

John Legend has donated his own money, hosted fundraisers and raised awareness through social media – and by showing up in court – on behalf of FRRC’s efforts to register formerly incarcerated individuals to vote, and to pay their administrative fines and fees. And Kevin Hart has donated money, and used his voice to support criminal justice reform.

LeBron James – through his More than A Vote (MTAV) initiative – has raised awareness and donated money to FRRC’s Fines & Fees program.

Other athletes joining James with MTAV include Atlanta Hawks guard Trae Young, Phoenix Mercury guard Skylar Diggins-Smith, New Orleans Saints running back Alvin Kamara, Golden State Warriors forward Draymond Green, and Miami Heat forward Udonis Haslem.

Michael Jordan — through his Jordan Brand and The Formerly Incarcerated Convicted People and Families Movement (FICPFM) — has donated money and raised awareness about the Fines &. Fees Program, while Sammy Watkins has supported both FRRC’s Fines & Fees Program, as well as its voter registration program.

Erika Alexander, actor and producer of the John Lewis documentary “Good Trouble,” has donated portions of the film’s proceeds to FRRC and is raising additional funding and awareness for FRRC’s work.

Anquan Boldin – as part of the Players Coalition – donated to the Fines & Fees Program and uses his platform to raise awareness about broader criminal justice reform.

The Orlando Magic – as part of their “Off the Bench and in the Game” campaign, are supporting FRRC by raising money and awareness about voting and local issues.

Haslem has also supported FRRC by raising awareness about the program, including doing an Instagram Live with FRRC Executive Director, Desmond Meade. And his team, the Miami Heat, is raising money for FRRC by selling Black Lives Matter apparel.
