Ryan Clark talks questions reaction to the Jacob Blake shooting on ESPN’s “Get Up” – Aug. 26, 2020

*For nearly seven minutes, ESPN commentator and former NFL player Ryan Clark went off about the dubious nature of the NBA’s current protests against racial injustice after being asked to comment on Doc Rivers’ tearful response to the Jacob Blake police shooting.

Clark’s main point was that the demonstrations we see within the NBA bubble this season – the Black Lives Matter messages on the court, and various pro-Black messages on the backs of jerseys – ultimately have no teeth when it comes to effective protest, because they’re sanctioned by the league.

On the other hand, “The reason we’re talkng about what Doc Rivers did [is] because it was real. Because it was from his heart. The reason we’re talking about what the Detroit Lions did [was] because it was a step away from the normal, and because the normal is Black people getting shot and us continuing to live life.”

The Detroit Lions canceled practice Tuesday to protest the shooting of Blake.
