Nigerian Cartoonists Gather on Google Meet

*Last Sunday August 23rd, Cartoonists Association of Nigeria CARTAN, held its first ever online Google Meet session discussing and highlighting the challenging times of cartooning and how the Business of Art can play a significant role in part. in improving the ability to monitze one’s work. As well as to be digitally visible online for one’s work to be relevant and recognized.

With tremendous feedback it was a virtual gathering of cartoonists, designers and animators and also cartoonists in the diaspora took part, anchored by TAYO Fatunla in the UK who spoke at length on the “Business of Art” and guests such as the doyen, dele jegede and Adewale Adenle both in the US contributed to the discussion. In Nigeria, the President of CARTAN Mike Asukwo and Mustapha Bulama were both guests and  also in virtual attendance were Alew Adejo, female animator Emy, Don Marvel, Dada Adekola, Jimoh Ganiyu (Jimga), Femi Adedeji to name a few as well as young aspiring Nigerian Cartoonists and Artists who had the opportunity to ask questions from TAYO.

CARTAN was formed to provide an umbrella body for professional Cartoonists in various fields of practice and to ensure professional integrity, high sense of responsibility and best practices among Practitioners in the discharge of their duty, both in private and to the general public. CARTAN also plans to periodically engage in ex-positional and educational activities via workshops, symposium, lectures, exhibitions, publications and through collaboration with other Nigerian and international institutions, all tailored towards inculcating current and emerging best practices in members’ fields of practice.

TAYO Fatunla is an award-winning Nigerian Comic Artist, Editorial Cartoonist, Writer and Illustrator. He is a graduate of the prestigious Kubert School, in New Jersey, US. and recipient of the 2018 ECBACC Pioneer Lifetime Achievement Award for his illustrated OUR ROOTS creation and series – Famous people in Black History – He participated in the UNESCO’s Cartooning In Africa forum held in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia and the Cartooning Global Forum in Paris, France and took part in the Afropolitan Comics, a virtual exhibition arranged by the French Institute in South Africa coinciding with the country’s National Arts Festival –
