Racist White Couple Arrested After Years-long Campaign of Harassment Against Black Neighbor

*Police have arrested a racist white couple who engaged in a years-long campaign of harassment against a Black woman that began when she moved into the house next door in 2017.

Famed civil rights attorney Ben Crump called the arrest of John McEneaney and 53-year-old Mindy Canarick of Long Island “long-overdue.”

The couple was arrested Monday and charged with harassment, criminal tampering, and criminal mischief.  They allegedly hurled fecal matter at the home of Jennifer McLeggan and shot a pellet gun at her.  McLeggan, a registered nurse and single mom, claims her neighbors also left dead squirrels on her property.

”I kept on noticing dog feces [in my yard]… I installed a camera here. I caught my neighbor throwing dog feces in front of my property,” she said. “I took that video to court, and I won a judgment.”

She was ultimately forced to place a handmade sign on her door that detailed the years of racism and harassment she and her 3-year-old daughter have endured.

“There’s no arrest, no restraining order,” McLeggan said back in July. “So they’re kind of waiting for me to drop dead in here before they can help me.”

“If I die in here, at least cops would see the sign,” she said.

“The sign on Jennifer McLeggan’s door broke my heart and rallied a community to her aid. It also moved my office to investigate this matter because nobody should have to live in fear of harassment from their neighbors,” Nassau County District Attorney Madeline Singas said. “Today, following a comprehensive review, investigators from my office arrested and charged these defendants because of a pattern of intolerable conduct that cannot be left unchecked. I hope that this prosecution, and the order of protection issued by Judge Prager today, afford Ms. McLeggan and her daughter the security they deserve, and I am grateful to the advocates and leaders who collaborated with our office throughout this investigation.”

The mother claims she was targeted because of her race, but investigators “did not find evidence to support a hate crime charge.”

“Jennifer serves on the front lines of the pandemic as a registered nurse,” Crump said. “She selflessly cares for the sick, got sick herself, and survived—all to come home to racist and prejudiced neighbors who tried to intimidate her and drive Ms. McLeggan and her precious little girl out of their community.”

The couple was released without bail at their arraignment. They have also been ordered to keep away from McLeggan.
