*The Seattle Kraken announced Friday that Everett Fitzhugh has been tapped to serve as the team’s broadcaster, making him the first Black play-by-play announcer in the NHL.

“As someone who’s worked in hockey for over a decade and who has a long-held passion for broadcast hockey, to be named team broadcaster for a brand-new NHL franchise — particularly one with an organization as strong as the Kraken — is a dream come true,” said Fitzhugh in a statement, per PEOPLE

“Getting to the NHL has always been my goal,” the Detroit native continued. “I look forward to serving as the voice for this incredible team and its fans as well as representing the Kraken organization throughout the greater Seattle community.”

Fitzhugh spent the past five seasons doing radio play-by-play for the Cincinnati Cyclones of the East Coast Hockey League, as well as working as the team’s director of media relations. He was a member of the broadcast crew for the 2018 ECHL All-Star Classic that was featured on NHL Network.

Among Friday’s hires, the Kraken announced Jonny Greco will serve as senior vice president of game presentation and live entertainment, and Lamont Buford is set to become the team’s vice president of game presentation.

The Seattle Kraken, which is the NHL’s 32nd team, was announced last week and will make its debut in the 2021-22 season.

The Seattle-based expansion team, inspired by the mythical sea creature, revealed their franchise name and logo last week. The main colors will be “deep sea blue” and “ice blue,” with “boundless blue,” “shadow blue” and “red alert” serving as accent colors, per thehofstrachronicle.com

“The Kraken is a name born of the fans,” said Tod Leiweke, the team’s president and CEO.
