Witnesses say the shooting occurred during a block party or cook out that was taking place in the middle of the residential street late last night, with hundreds of people attending.

Many said the gunfire sounded as if it was being fired from an automatic weapon or more than one gun.

Local resident George Benton uploaded footage of the shooting’s aftermath. He said he had been inside his home when he heard ‘about 100 gun shots’ ring out.

Benton said that officials at the scene said as many as 15 people were shot, including children.

In an update posted this morning, Benton claimed he had been told by an officer at that eight different guns were reportedly used in the shooting.

The Sixth District has not yet responded to a DailyMail.com request for comment on the ages of the victims or the number of gunmen involved.

D.C. Police Chief Peter Newsham said the off-duty officer who was shot is assigned to the 1st District and has been with the police department for a year. He said she is “fighting for her life.”

He said there were at least three gunmen, who used handguns, shooting from three spots simultaneously. No motive was offered.
