*Nia DaCosta has made Hollywood history as the first Black woman tapped to direct a Marvel film.

DaCosta landed the gig for the upcoming “Captain Marvel 2″ starring Brie Larson, according to Variety. She will be the fourth woman to direct a major movie for the studio, after Anna Boden co-directed 2019’s “Captain Marvel” and Cate Shortland, who helmed “Black Widow” and “Eternals” director Chloé Zhao, per PEOPLE.

DaCosta’s breakthrough film was her indie “Little Woods,” which caught the attention of Jordan Peele, who tapped her to direct the reimagining of “Candyman,” out this fall.

Based on the short story “The Forbidden” by Clive Barker, the original film followed a graduate student in Chicago completing a thesis on urban legends, which led her to the legend of “Candyman,” the ghost of an artist and son of a slave who was murdered in the late 19th century.

DaCosta’s sequel stars Yahya Abdul-Mateen II (Watchmen) as Anthony McCoy, a young artist looking to spark renewed interest in the local myth surrounding Chicago’s now gentrified and safe Cabrini Green projects. It does not go well.

Rounding out the cast is Teyonah Parris, Nathan Stewart-Jarrett, Colman Domingo, with Tony Todd and Vanessa A. Williams reprising their roles as the title character and Anne-Marie McCoy.

In April 2019, DaCosta told IndieWire she wanted “to tell good stories in ways that will shine light on lives rarely seen on screen because stories can push humanity forward.”

“I think a diversity of stories is really important in raising awareness and creating empathy,” she continued. “It’s through this medium of film that many of us learn about and communicate with one another, especially with people we don’t know.”
