Issa Rae Partners with HBO for Documentary About Black TV History

*”Insecure” star Issa Rae will executive produce a two-part documentary for HBO exploring the history of black television.

HBO announced the documentary titled “Seen & Heard,” at its virtual Television Critics Association sessions Wednesday. The project, which is currently in production, “will explore the history of Black television through the eyes of trailblazers who produced, created and starred in a number of groundbreaking series,” per THR

“Black people have such a rich, but often unacknowledged history in Hollywood,” said Rae. “We have defined American culture and influenced generations time and time again across the globe. I’m honored to pair with Ark Media to center and celebrate the achievements of those who paved a way for so many of us to tell our stories on television.”

Seen & Heardwill be directed and produced by Phil Bertelsen, who helmed Netflix’s six-part doc series “Who Killed Malcolm X?”

In related news, Issa has teamed with Jordan Peele’s Moneypaw and Universal Pictures on the female-lead sci-fi feature “Sinkhole.”

According to Deadline, the story centers on “a young family that moves into its dream home despite the gaping sinkhole in the backyard. The mysterious sinkhole manages to fix broken and destroyed things. However, the story asks, what if that thing is a person?”

Universal beat out more than 10 studio bidders for screen rights to the Leyna Krow short story, in a low-seven-figure deal.

Meanwhile, Issa’s hit HBO series “Insecure” just received 11 Emmy nominations, including one for Rae with Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series.

She has also been tapped to co-star in HBO’s upcoming scripted comedy set during the coronavirus pandemic 

According to EW, “Coastal Elites” is a satire from playwright and screenwriter Paul Rudnick and Jay Roach. The projects boasts “an all-star cast playing characters from New York to Los Angeles coping with politics and the pandemic” and “tells stories of breaking down and breaking through in the summer of 2020 that are funny, searing, poignant and now.”

The cast includes Bette Midler, Sarah Paulson, Kaitlyn Dever and Dan Levy.
