Google Announces New Ways They’re Supporting Black-owned Businesses

*”Starting today, merchants in the U.S. with a verified Business Profile on Google can add a Black-owned business attribute to their profile, making it easier for customers to find and support them. As part of our $300 million commitment to support underrepresented entrepreneurs, we’re also integrating the attribute into the digital skills training programs we offer Black business owners through Grow with Google Digital Coaches,” Jewel Burks, Head of Google for Startups U.S., said in a blog post.

Burks said with this attribute, their goal is to make Search and Maps more inclusive and help support Black-owned businesses.

“Everyone who comes into this store is welcome,” says Janet Jones, founder and co-owner of the Detroit-based Source Booksellers. “For us, being Black-owned means serving the community we’re in.”

By adding the attribute, people using Google Search and Maps can see Source Booksellers is Black-owned, and easily extend their support by purchasing one of their products, leaving a great review and sharing their Business Profile with others looking for their next book.

To help get the word out about the new Black-owned attribute, we’ve partnered with the U.S. Black Chambers, Inc. (USBC). With 145 Black Chambers of Commerce and 326,000 members across the country, USBC provides leadership and advocacy to empower Black business owners through resources and initiatives.

Together, Google and USBC will provide training for Black-owned businesses to enhance their presence on Google through the use of digital tools like Google My Business and Google Analytics. Our hope is that by partnering with USBC, we can help more businesses connect with their community and customers.

Rick Ross Buys 87 Acres of Land in Georgia for $1M

*Rapper Rick Ross has dropped  $1 million on an 87-acre plot of land in Fayetteville, Georgia, located 20 miles outside from Atlanta. 

According to TMZ, the land comes with 2 houses on the property that could be renovated for Rick’s personal use ot turned into rentals. The property is adjacent to his own estate.

Promise Land just got BIGGER.

Ross celebrated the new addition to his “Promise Land” via a post on Instagram (see above). The land is located near Ross’ 45,000-square-foot mansion that boasts 109 rooms, an indoor and outdoor pool, a movie theater, and a bowling alley, per Complex

News of Ross dropping a million for the land coincides with the announcement that 19 Black families have joined forces to buy more than 96 acres near Toomsboro, Georgia – about two hours outside Atlanta.

Renee Walters and Ashley Scott, the two women who spearheaded the operation, said they were moved to take action following the police killings of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor.

The families purchased nearly 97 acres of unincorporated land near the town of Toomsboro. The area has been dubbed Freedom, Georgia, and overtime the families intend to turn it into a safe haven for Black people.  

The families want Black parents to be able to raise their children in a space that is free of police brutality, as Walters and Scott explained to TMZ. Once fully operational, the pro-Black town will not exclude other groups of people from living there. 

“This is our answer to breaking generational curses,” said Scott who is also a real estate agent. 

“We’re planning on recycling our Black dollar between the 19 families that are a part of our organization, that’s really what Black Wall Street was about it was about that local economy, that hyper-local economy where the dollar continuously circulated before it exited,” she added.

Q: On Your Passion for Food?

FJ:” My passion for food came from my grandmother and my mother, at early age, probably around four or five, being with them all the time in the kitchen, where everyone was outside playing. I was in the kitchen with them. Since that early age, I saw that food and cooking always brought our families together.”

Q: On Spices?

FJ: “With my African American, and Indian descent on my mother’s side, I also know spices. I traveled all around the world, studying under some of the best chefs and cooks around the world that taught me. That was the best education I could ever get! It’s these chefs, as well as those grandmas who took me in their kitchens and shared with me their generational recipes who taught me. For that, I am grateful.”

Q: On Multitasking?

FJ: “For me, there is no such thing multi-tasking. There’s just focusing on one thing and then shifting—quickly—to the next. And if there is only one thing, I focus on in any one day it’s my power customer. So many concepts are always chasing those infrequent users. I want to focus on the ones who put bread on my table. They are my stars. My celebrities. And you better believe I treat them that way!”

When asked to share about Celebrity’s infrastructure, Dr. Jacobs stated, “The Celebrity’s Soul Food experience operates like a start up with the infrastructure of an established brand.” He adds, “We have a complete management team, from development to vendor relations and even a sustainability officer.”
