RADIOSCOPE REWIND: Groove Theory is Shocked By the Success of their 1st Single ‘Tell Me’ in 1996

*Remember the first time you heard “Tell Me” from this new group called Groove Theory? It was as if singer-songwriter Amel Larrieux and songwriter-producer Bryce Wilson came out of nowhere in September of ’95 with that head-thumping, “All Night Long-sampling earworm that dominated urban radio.

The duo’s self-titled debut album was released the following month, as the chart climbing “Tell Me” and its remixes kept the song hot straight through the New Year. It wasn’t until late January that their label Epic decided to drop a second single. That’s when Larrieux and Wilson crossed paths with RadioScope.

Below, the two members of Groove Theory talk about their shock over the success of “Tell Me,” their collaborative process, Wilson’s disillusionment with the state of R&B at the time and the message behind their second single, “Keep Tryin’.”
