Meghan Markle Caught Heat From Palace Aides Over ‘H&M’ Necklace, New Book Claims

*When Meghan Markle stepped out in a necklace bearing the initials “H” and “M,” she allegedly pissed off palace aides.

Markle was photographed wearing the $300 14-carat gold chain early in her relationship with Prince Harry.

In the best-selling new book “Finding Freedom: Harry and Meghan and the Making of a Modern Royal Family, veteran royal journalists Omid Scobie and Carolyn Durand report that the former actress caught heat over the necklace.

“She was advised that wearing such a necklace only served to encourage the photographers to keep pursuing such images — and new headlines,” Scobie and Durand write in the book, per PEOPLE.

According to the book, during a conversation with a senior Kensington Palace aide, Meghan “said little during the call, choosing instead to simply listen to the counsel. But after hanging up, she felt frustrated and emotional. While she knew the aide had good intentions, the surreal experience of having someone from her boyfriend’s office tell her what kind of jewelry to wear or not to smile at a photographer was too much.”

Meghan then called a friend, saying, “I can’t win. They make out like I’m to blame for these pictures, that it looks like I’m encouraging them, that me even acknowledging the cameras may not be sending the right message. I don’t know what to say. It was only yesterday that people online were saying I look miserable in pictures, because I was trying to just ignore the [photographer].”

Markle “felt damned if she did and damned if she didn’t,” the authors write.

According to an excerpt, Harry and Meghan were left feeling some way during Queen Elizabeth’s Christmas speech last year, and there were no photos of the couple.

The authors said “For Harry and Meghan, it had been yet another sign that they needed to consider their own path.”

The book claims they felt they had “long been sidelined by the institution” and were “not a fundamental part of its future.”

“Finding Freedom” also details Markle’s “awkward moments” with Kate Middleton, Prince William’s wife.

“Though it was not necessarily her responsibility, Kate did little to bridge the divide,” according to Scobie and Durand.

The authors note that both women “struggled to move past distant politeness.”

Here’s more from the book’s description:

“For the very first time, ‘Finding Freedom’ goes beyond the headlines to reveal unknown details of Harry and Meghan’s life together, dispelling the many rumors and misconceptions that plague the couple on both sides of the pond,” read the book’s description. “As members of the select group of reporters that cover the British Royal Family and their engagements, Omid Scobie and Carolyn Durand have witnessed the young couple’s lives as few outsiders can.”

“With unique access and written with the participation of those closest to the couple, ‘Finding Freedom’ is an honest, up-close, and disarming portrait of a confident, influential, and forward-thinking couple who are unafraid to break with tradition, determined to create a new path away from the spotlight, and dedicate to building a humanitarian legacy that will make a profound difference in the world,” the description added.

“Finding Freedom” will be published in the U.S. on August 11.
