*The NFL team formerly known as the Washington Redskins have rolled out a temporary name for the 2020  season.

The organization will be known as “Washington Football Team” until it comes up with a more permanent name change amid criticism over its history as a racial slur against Native Americans, ESPN reports.

The plan is to remove the former name/logo physically and digitally over the next 50 days, and the team will use the new name and new uniforms (see pic above) for their first game of the season on Sept. 13, per PEOPLE.

“For updated brand clarity and consistency purposes, we will call ourselves the ‘Washington Football Team’ pending adoption of our new name,” the team said. “The Redskins name and logo will officially be retired by the start of the 2020 season. We encourage fans, media and all other parties to use ‘Washington Football Team’ immediately.”

The press release continued, “In addition, we are rolling out an aesthetic that reflects the direction of the franchise as we progress toward a new name and design scheme.”

The team noted in a July 13 statement that owner Dan Snyder and Coach Rivera were “working closely to develop a new name and design approach that will enhance the standing of our proud, tradition-rich franchise and inspire our sponsors, fans and community for the next 100 years.”

“This process allows the team to take into account not only the proud tradition and history of the franchise but also input from our alumni, the organization, sponsors, the National Football League and the local community it is proud to represent on and off the field,” Snyder said in a statement.

ESPN’s NFL Insider, Adam Schefter, noted of the team’s re-branding process, “Washington will not have any change to its color scheme. It will still use burgundy and gold. The Redskins logo on the helmet will be replaced by the player’s number in gold. The Washington Football Team will debut its home uniforms in week 1 against the Eagles,” he wrote on Twitter

Washington dropped its old name and logo earlier this month amid pressure from sponsors and activists. There’s no word yet on when the new name will be revealed.

“The decision to use ‘Washington Football Team’ for this season allows the franchise the ability to undertake an in-depth branding process to properly include player, alumni, fan, community, and sponsor input,” the franchise announced in a statement.

“To date, we have been pleased to see so many people putting forward their vision of what the new name and design should be on their social media channels and we look forward to including their feedback as this process progresses.”
